Biggs Theater/ Concert Hall

The Biggs Theater, the main performance space in the Freed Center for the Performing Arts, is named in honor of Eleanor Hughes Biggs. It was dedicated October 11, 1991.

Mrs. Biggs had a life-long interest in the performing arts. She was born in Oberlin on May 5, 1909 and began studying piano and violin starting at age 5. She lost both her parents and a sister at an early age in an automobile accident. Mrs. Biggs entered Oberlin College at age 16 and graduated with a degree in sociology in 1929.

On January 30, 1932, she married Robert Biggs, a 1930 Northern graduate in mechanical engineering. Mrs. Biggs served as a university trustee from 1987 until her death in April 1991.
