NLM Citation

Basic Article Journal Format

Author's Last Name, Author's Initials. Title of article. Title of Journal. Publication Date; Volume(Issue):Page(s)

  • List all authors, last name first, then first initial and middle initial, if available, separate each author by a comma.
  • List full article title, capitalize only first word and any proper nouns.
  • Abbreviate journal title according to NLM Catalog of Journals.
  • Put year first, followed by month and date, if listed. End with semicolon.
  • Put volume and issue (optionally, issue may be omitted if pagination continues for each issue). Do not add space after semicolon. End with colon.
  • Indicate page number range. Do not repeat numbers or put a space after colon. i.e. if date range is 1235 through 1237, record as 1235-7.

Basic Format for Website Homepage

Author's last name Author's first and second initials. Title of website homepage: [Internet]. Place of Publication: Publisher; Date of Publication [Date of Update/Revision;Date of Retrieval].Availability/URL.

  • Authors may be organizations or groups instead of individual people. This is very common with web pages and government resources. If you are unable to identify an author of any kind, start your citation with the title of the source.  
  • Dates are often missing on web pages. Date of publication is the date the homepage was first placed on the Internet and is often listed as the copyright date, found frequently at the bottom of the page.  If you use the copyright date, write as c2019. If neither the date of publication nor the copyright date can be found, just omit it and be sure to put in the date of revision and date of retrieval>
  • Include the date of retrieval as the contents of the page may change.

Part of a Website

Title of Homepage [Internet]. Place of Publication: Publisher; Date of Publication of Homepage. Title of the Part; Date of Publication of Part [Date of Retrieval]; [Length of part]. Availability from: URL

Length of part: 

  • For parts with standard page numbers such as those in PDF, enter the page number or numbers on which the part appears. Examples: p. 438 and p. 663-4.
  • For parts without page numbers, provide the approximate number of screens.
