Types of Sources

Books/Book Chapters

Books cover all types of topics and can be fiction or non-fiction. For research purposes, you will probably be looking for books that synthesize information on a topic. You may only need to read a chapter of the book to get the information you need for your research.  Use the library catalog to find books and e-books.

Government Information

Government information could be data, reports, transcripts from hearings or information on a webpage.  This information could be from the federal or state government.  Some information from the government is created for the general public.  Some information from the government is very technical and scientific.  Government information can be found online and the website will end in .gov.

News/Newspapers

Newspapers and news sites provide articles each day about current events.  News articles can be found online and through the library's main search box.

Scholarly Journal Articles

Journal articles are written by scholars in an academic or professional field. An editor and then often peer reviewers review an article before it is published in a scholarly journal.  Journal articles cover very specific topics or narrow fields of research. Use a database like PubMED to find journal articles.
