Alma Migration Information

Alma Products

Alma: Back end where staff work is done, like Sierra. We may also refer to it as the LSP (library service platform) or ILS (integrated library system, but this is the older term).

Primo/Primo VE: Front end for patron use, like SearchONU and Polar combined.

Alma Digital/Alma D: Hosts files that are owned by the institution, like our current Institutional Repository, Digital Commons


Rapido: Supports interlibrary-loan and consortial print lending, like Inn-Reach and ILL. (Will be activated soon after Alma goes live to restart lending)

Rialto: A vendor-neutral marketplace for purchasing materials. (Will be activated after Alma goes live. TBD)

Leganto: A resource list management system that will integrate with Canvas. (Will be activated after Alma goes live. TBD) 

CampusM: mobile application that integrates Alma, Primo, Leganto, and a local learning management system.  (Will be activated after Alma goes live. TBD)

Alma Zones

Alma is organized into different interconnected zones for sharing data. 

inverted triangle with network zone, then institution zone, then libraryCommunity Zone: The central KnowledgeBase for electronic resources. Managed by ExLibris and accessible to all Alma users.

Network Zone: OhioLINK environment where shared data is managed. Consortial/central catalog; Inn-Reach.

Institution Zone: ONU's inventory, similar to Sierra. This is where our local inventory (items, holdings, portfolios, orders, payments, vendor records, and funds live. Bib records are here, but may be linked to the Network Zone.

Institution: A group of libraries managed together (the ONU libraries).

Alma Terminology

This is primarily terms that differ from Sierra and not intended to be a comprehensive glossary. See links below for that. Let Jenny or Heather know if there are terms that you think should be included here.


Digital Resources: Electronic files owned by the institution, like digitized items from the Archives or files in the Institutional Repository

Electronic Resources: Electronic files that are accessed on provider sites, like electronic journals, ebooks, and databases

Fulfillment: Circulation

Integration profile: Mechanism for integrating the import and export processes between Alma and an external system. Load/Export table in Sierra.

Loan: (Item) check out 

Match method: Match/overlay. Used to identify duplicate records.

Metadata import profile: Used for importing records. Load profile/load table in Sierra.

Patron services area: Portion of Alma for performing fulfillment functions. The circulation module.

Policy type: Specifies policy influence area, like due dates or fines. Loan Rule Determiner Table in Sierra.

Privileges: User permissions.

Reading lists: Course reserves

Resource sharing incoming (lending) request: Lending request

Resource sharing outgoing (borrowing) request: Borrowing request

Resource sharing partner: Institution that participates in resource sharing. Participating Site in Sierra.

Role parameter: User/permissions.

Set management:  Activities that involve creating and administering logical and itemized sets. Create Lists in Sierra.

Set member: A bibliographic record or inventory item that belongs to an itemized set or the output of a logical set’s query. 

Terms of Use (TOU) : Predefined fulfillment policies. Loan rule in Sierra.

TOU type: Terms of use that can be assigned to a specific fulfillment activity.

User: Patron

  • Portfolio: an individual title or resource
  • Database: an electronic collection without portfolios. Potentially non full text sources?
