Journey of an OhioLINK Book

Preparing HML books for OhioLINK circulation

Please follow these instructions when you are asked to gather OhioLINK items.  Paging slips are printed twice per day. These slips tell us what we need to get to send to other libraries. The slips will be folded in half and put in call number order. There is only one item per paging slip. On any given day there can be items needed from all collections in the library. The author, title and call number are all clearly listed on the paging slip.

  • Take the slips and a cart with you. It is suggested you begin on the 3rd floor and work your way down.
  • Pull the items listed and place the paging slip inside the 3rd or 4th page to the front of the book. Place the fold of the paging slip towards the binding of the book. You should be able to see the name of the institution the book is going to when placing the paging slip in the book.
  • Once all items are collected, give the ALA the paging slips of any items you were unable to find.
  • The ALA will check the items out to the shippers
  • You will take the now checked out items back to the OhioLink processing area to prepare them for shipping
  • You will place either a sticker or a band on the item and write the 3 digit shipping number listed on the paging slip on the band or sticker
  • Then the item will be placed in the metal holding boxes and the matching shipping tag will be clipped to the metal box, once again matching the 3 digit shipping number.

Banding Ohio Link Items

Detailed Banding/Sticker Instructions
  • Place sticker on cover of book
  • Write transit number in designated spot
OR
  • Place one OhioLINK band on each book by placing the paper strip writing side up on the front cover of the book.
  • Bend the top and bottom ends to the inside of the book. If they do not touch, place a piece of scrap paper between the ends and tape ends of the band to the scrap paper, otherwise, tape the ends to each other. Don’t ever tape directly to a book.
  • Be sure the band is as tight as possible to prevent loss.

For A/V items, collect the OhioLINK stickers written in black ink located in the box on the middle shelves in the back of the circulation department
  • Remove backing from the sticker and place on the A/V item on the side without the date due label.
  • Do not cover any labels which have been placed on the A/V materials by the library technical services staff
  • If there is little available room on the A/V item, trim the sticker so that it fits, but still shows “Owned by Ohio Northern University”.
  • Write transit number of the school (found on the paging slip) in the space on the band or in the upper right hand corner of the A/V sticker.

Pick up Anywhere Items

THE OHIOLINK SYSTEM ALLOWS PATRONS TO SEND THEIR REQUESTS TO ANY PARTICIPATING INSTITUTION, NOT JUST THE ONE FROM WHICH THEY ARE REQUESTING. WHEN THIS HAPPENS, THE WORDS “PICK UP ANYWHERE” IS PRINTED AT THE TOP OF THE PAGING SLIP. THE ALA OR WHOEVER PRINTS THE PAGING SLIP WILL HIGHLIGHT THIS INFORMATION WITH A GREEN HIGHLIGHTER. THE ABOVE PROCEDURES ARE THEN FOLLOWED WITH THE EXCEPTION THAT THE NEON GREEN OHIOLINK BANDS OR STICKERS ARE USED.
