SLA Training -- Heterick Memorial Library

Updated: 2016/09/16

General Guidelines

  • Watch the screen at all times for pop-up boxes. If you are unsure how to handle a pop-up, ask an ALA or librarian.
  • Patrons must have their own ID to check out items. Do not check out items to patrons who are using someone else's ID. While we prefer that patrons have their ONU ID, we also accept any photo ID (for example, a driver's license). If a patron needs to use an ID other than their ONU ID to check out an item, get a library staff person or librarian to perform the checkout.

Check in

The Sierra Circulation desk screen should be up.
If this is not the case, contact an ALA or a librarian.
  • Select the Check-In function from the drop-down menu.
  • Scan the item barcode.
  • Check the screen to see if additional action is required, and follow on-screen instructions.
  • Stamp the return date on the date slip--use RED ink.
  • Place on the correct processing shelf in call number order.

There are three ways patrons may renew books:
1.   In person
  • Choose the Check Out option from the drop down menu.
  • Swipe the patron's ID.
  • Click on the Checked-Out items tab.
  • Select the item(s) the patron wishes to renew.
  • Click on the renew button.
  • If the patron brought the items, stamp items with new due date. Tell the patron the new date.
  • Choose the Renew option from the drop down menu.
  • Scan item barcode.
  • Stamp the item with the new due date.
 2. Telephone
  • Only ALAs and librarians can make renewals over the phone.
  • If an ALA or librarian is unavailable, take the person's name and phone number and tell them someone will call them back shortly. You can also offer them the option of renewing online.
3.  Online
Patrons may renew items themselves in their online account, as long as the items are within two days of being due.
  • Go to
  • Enter name and entire id number as found on ONU ID.
  • Click on link showing number of items currently checked out.
  • To renew all, click the "Renew All" button.
  • To renew selected items, click on the boxes beside their titles and click the "Renew Marked" button.
  • A message will appear with the new due date.
HML owned items may be renewed six times (unless there is a request attached). OhioLINK items may be renewed six times (unless there is a request attached).

Damaged Item

If an item is damaged and needs repair, please fill out the Technical Services Information Form and give the item to an ALA or librarian.

Check out

The Sierra Circulation desk screen should be up. If this is not the case, contact an ALA or librarian.
  • Select the Check Out function from the drop-down menu.
  • Swipe the patron's ONU or Community User card.
Make sure the name on the screen matches that on the ID.
  • Scan barcode on item.
    • Make sure the information on the screen matches the item.
    • Make sure the due date is appropriate for the item and patron type.
  • Stamp the due date on due date slip--use BLUE ink.
  • Inform patron of the due date(s) and hand them the item(s).
  • Remind the patron they can manage their account online.

Manual Check Out

Manual checkouts are necessary in cases when:
  • A patron’s card will not swipe.
  • A patron’s ID number is not recognized.
  • There is a problem with the item barcode.
Only ALAs or librarians may do a manual checkout.
When you think a manual checkout may be necessary, notify an ALA or librarian.

If the status "Missing" appears along with the patron's name when you check in an item, you must give the material to a supervisor.

If the item has a Hold, the system will display the following message:
Put on hold shelf for [patron's name]. Pickup notice to be printed. Print slip?
  • Click Yes
Mark slip with patron’s name and the date. Place the slip in the item, and place the item on the Hold/OhioLINK shelves in alphabetical order.
